Compact, portable and sturdy, Victor Reader Classic + with Recording goes anywhere with you, with rechargeable batteries and built-in carrying handle.

The first time you use Victor Reader, you should connect the unit to a power outlet. The batteries may have lost power during shipping, even though they were charged before leaving the factory. The box you just opened contains the following items: A Victor Reader Classic + with Recording, an AC/DC adapter with power cord or a wall plug-in, a plastic bag containing documentation and the CD you are currently listening to, containing a Getting Started session followed by the User's Guide.

This introductory session will give step-by-step instructions and the basic information needed in order to use Victor Reader correctly. First you'll hear a physical description of the unit. Then we'll introduce Victor Reader easy-to-use features.

6. Audio Notes and Categories

Recordings not attached to bookmarks are called audio notes. Audio notes are stored in categories. The combined categories and their notes are called an Audio Note book. You can have one Audio Note book on the removable SD card and another Note book in internal memory. You may back up the internal Audio Note book to the SD card and the recorded notes are accessible on a PC equipped with a flash card reader. You may create up to 99 categories per book and up to 999 audio notes per category.

Typically, you record an audio note by positioning to the category you wish to save it in and then press the Record key. If you do not position to the category first, you will create what is called a Quick Note in the last referenced category.

Back to Table of contents.

6.1. Create a New Category

Audio Notes are saved in categories so you should first create at least one category on your card or in the internal Audio Note book. If you neglect to create a category then Victor Reader will place your audio note in a category called Default. If this happens, you can later rename the Default category using the Rename Category function.

To create a new category, do the following:

a) Use the Bookshelf key, Key 1, to select Internal Note Book or Card Note Book.
b) Use the 2 and 8 keys to select category level.

9. Recording Features and Memory

The Victor Reader Classic + with Recording is three units in one: a CD player, a flash recorder, and a flash player.

The Victor Reader Classic + With Recording includes an SD memory card slot as well as internal flash memory. It will help you with daily activities such as recording voice notes, classroom lectures, task lists, and audio bookmarks.

Victor Reader Classic + with Recording is also a flash player. DAISY books, MP3 music or MP3 books saved to an SD card can be played with the same navigation and bookmarking features as a book on a CD.

Back to Table of contents.

9.1. Memory

There are two types of memory: internal and external. Internal memory is onboard flash. External memory refers to the removable SD (Secure Digital) type memory card, which can be purchased separately from various vendors. The removable external SD card is used to store and save the following types of files:

The capacity of SD cards vary from 64 mb (megabytes) to 1,000 mb or 1 gigabyte.

The internal flash memory is used to store:

The capacity of internal memory is 9mb for bookmarks and 12mb for audio notes. This allows over 2,000 simple bookmarks, up to 90 minutes of audio bookmarks, and up to 2 hours of audio notes.
The internal memory simple bookmarks, audio bookmarks, and audio notes can be backed up to the removable flash card for transfer to a PC. The playback functionality is the same for all files whether they are on CD or SD card or internal memory.

Back to Table of contents.

9.2. Protecting an SD Card

SD cards have a small tab on the lower right edge which you can slide up and down. When the tab is in the up position, the SD card is write protected which means it is protected from recording. If you wish to record on the card or copy files to it from your PC, this tab must be in the down position.

Note also, that if you protect the card then the Menu Memory Management options such as Record Quick Notes to Card, Record Card Label, and Backup cannot be selected. If the SD card is protected and you select these Menu options, Victor Reader will issue the error, "Card is write-protected".

9.4. Recording Sources

Victor Reader Classic + With Recording allows you to use three recording sources. Line in, external microphone, or internal microphone.

Victor Reader will announce which of the three recording sources is currently being used when you plug-in or unplug the appropriate connector in the external microphone jack or in the recording line-in jack. If nothing is connected, the internal microphone will be the recording source.

While recording you may switch between any recording source without stopping the recording. In this case, you should monitor with headphones so the messages will not feed back into the recording.

Victor Reader will always use the current recording source when you press the Record key.

When recording from any source, the audio feed is channeled to the headphones, if connected, so that you can monitor the recording. The line-in audio feed will be channeled to the speaker if no headphones are connected.

Back to Table of contents.

9.4.1. Microphones

Victor Reader Classic + With Recording comes with an internal omni-directional microphone. It is sensitive to pick up sounds from all directions which is useful for recording meetings and lectures. You can also plug in your choice of external microphones for special purpose recording. Both microphone sources are enhanced with auto gain control to automatically adjust the recording level.

Back to Table of contents.

9.4.2. Stereo Music

Note that music recorded through the line-in will be recorded in mono. Victor Reader Classic + With Recording does not record in stereo. If you monitor a line-in stereo source with headphones, you will hear the input in stereo but it will be converted to mono when recorded. However, if you copy stereo MP3 files from your computer to the SD card then Victor Reader will play those files in stereo.

Back to Table of contents.

9.5. Pause Recording

The first time you press the Record key, the recording will begin. You will hear a beep and a message to confirm that you have started recording a note. While recording, you can use the Record key to pause and resume recording as many times as you like. You will hear the messages, "Pause recording", when you pause and "Resume recording" when you restart. To end the recording, press the Play/Stop key or the # key. You'll hear the messages "Stop recording, Note saved", If you press the * key while recording, the recording session will be canceled and you will lose the data you were recording. Nothing will be saved.

9.6. Accessing the SD Card with Your PC

The contents of the SD flash card may be accessed on your PC using Windows Explorer. You can also add content on the SD card using your PC, as long as you follow the structure and naming conventions described below.

Back to Table of contents.

9.6.1. Copy a DAISY Book onto the SD Card

You may copy a DAISY book on to the SD card by copying all files of the DAISY book structure into the root folder of the SD card. You must copy all files. You cannot copy a portion of the DAISY book.

Back to Table of contents.

9.6.2. Copy MP3 files onto the SD Card

You may copy MP3 files from your PC onto the SD card.

The MP3 files must be copied to a reserved folder on the SD card named, $VR_OtherAudio, so they will not be confused with MP3 files of a DAISY book which reside in the root folder of the card. They will be available to play on the Victor Reader Bookshelf as an Other Audio book.

Back to Table of contents.

9.7. File Structure and File Names

This section describes the file structure and naming conventions used for Victor Reader Classic + With Recording. This information can be useful when you transfer files between Victor Reader and your PC via the SD card.

If you create any other folders or files that do not conform to the formats described below, Victor Reader will ignore them.

Back to Table of contents.

9.7.1. Audio Bookmarks

Audio bookmarks are high compression GSM (.wav) files linked to the simple bookmarks in internal memory. The file name format is x_y_z.wav where x is the first 13 characters of the book title text, y is an 8-character computer generated unique book id, and z is the 6 digit bookmark number. For bookmarks placed in audio CDs, MP3 files, or audio notes there is no book title. In these cases, x will be "AudioCD______", "OtherAudio___", or "Audio Note____", respectively.

Back to Table of contents.

9.7.2. Audio Notes

Audio notes are individual files within a single level of category folders. Each audio note file name is in the format nnn_yyyy-mm-dd_hhmm.MP3 for low compression MP3 ornnn_yyyy-mm-dd_hhmm.wav for high compression GSM where nnn is an incremental file number that starts at 001 up to 999, yyyy-mm-dd is the date the file was created, and hhmm is the time the file was created in 24-hour time format. The combined category folders and their member notes are called a Note Book. The note book is accessed via the bookshelf.

Back to Table of contents.

9.7.3. Categories

Categories are folders that contain the audio note files. The folder names are category01, category02, and so on up to category99. These are created incrementally as you add new categories. The first file of each category is 000_yyyy-mm-dd_hhmm.mp3 (or .wav if recorded in high compression GSM), which contains the category name that you recorded.

If you delete the category name file, then no category name will be announced.

The folder containing all the categories is itself a reserved folder, $VR_NOTES. This folder is created automatically when you create the first audio note or category.

Back to Table of contents.

9.7.4. SD Card Label

The SD Card Label file is a reserved file called $VR_CardLabel.MP3 (or .wav if recorded in high compression GSM), which is created in the root of the SD flash. This file contains the audio label that you recorded for the SD card.

Back to Table of contents.

9.7.5. Other

There is also a reserved file in the root called $VR_CARDID.DAT that contains information needed to identify the card. Do not modify this file.

Other reserved names that have already been presented are the $VR_Backup_yyyy-mm-dd_hhmm (see Backup under section 8.2.4) and $VR_OtherAudio (section 9.6.2).

Back to Table of contents.

9.8. Memory Full

Every time you begin a recording, Victor Reader will calculate the amount of remaining memory.

For a new audio note, if the memory available is 15 minutes or less it will be announced immediately after the Record key is pressed. The message will include the recording time remaining.

For any type of recording, if the remaining memory available is less than one minute, recording will be disabled and you will hear an error message when you press Record.

The calculation of remaining memory is based on the current compression level.

If memory fills up during a recording, Victor Reader will end the recording and save what has been recorded up to that point.

Back to Table of contents.

11.1. Book Navigation

11.1.1. Why does Victor not always announce the same DAISY levels when I press the 2 and 8 keys?

The 2 and 8 keys cycle through the DAISY navigation levels provided by the producer of the book. Not all DAISY books have the same navigation levels. For example, your book's producer may have only inserted level 1 (often used for chapters) marks into the book. In this case, the 2 and 8 keys will announce only "level 1" and "phrase". A phrase level is always included. Victor can only navigate at the levels provided by the book producer. Often, the Go-to-Page function will not work because many books are produced without DAISY page marks. Also, the phrase jump is not the same for each book. Some producers may include a phrase mark for a single sentence while others may markup phrase as an arbitrary time jump. Still others have converted older cassette books and inserted a phrase as an entire side of one cassette. For books with little or no DAISY navigation marks, you will need to navigate with the fast forward and rewind keys. The Rewind key is to the left of the Play/Pause key and the Fast Forward key is to the right of the Play/Pause Key.

Back to Table of contents.

11.1.2. How do I know what DAISY navigation levels are available in my book?

The 2 and 8 keys will cycle through the levels of navigation available in the book. Many book producers include a section at the beginning of the book that describes what the DAISY levels correspond to in that book. Check with your book producer if you are unsure of the book's navigation features.

Back to Table of contents.

11.1.3. How do I quickly jump to the start or end of a book?

The Victor Classic and Classic + have automatic bookmarks for the beginning or end of the book. Press the Bookmark key until you hear Victor announce, "Bookmark List". Then press the left arrow key until you hear, "beginning of book". The beginning of book is always to the left of the first user bookmark. Similarly, to reach the end of the book, press the right arrow in the bookmark list until you hear "end of book". The end of book is always to the right of the last user bookmark. If you have not set any bookmarks then you need only press the left arrow key once in the bookmark list to reach the beginning of the book or press the right arrow once to reach the end. In the Classic + you can also reach the start of the book by pressing the Go-to-Page key, then the 0 key, then the Play key.

No.

Back to Table of contents.

11.2.4. How can I confirm that I have connected the AC/DC adapter correctly?

When you place the player in front of you with the handle on the left, the hole for the AC/DC adapter plug is the hole farthest from you on the right edge of the player. It is marked with three vertical lines. When you connect the AC/DC adapter plug while Victor is on you will hear a short chime. This confirms you are connected and the batteries are charging. You may also confirm that the power supply is properly connected by pressing the INFO key on the Victor Classic or the 0 key on the Classic + and listening for the message, "power cord operated". When not connected to the AC power these info keys will report that Victor is battery operated. IF you unplug the AC/DC adapter while Victor is powered on you will again hear a short chime confirming power has been disconnected.

Back to Table of contents.

11.2.5. Can I reduce the effectiveness of my batteries by under-charging or over-charging?

No. Victor uses high quality NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride ) rechargeable batteries that do not have a chemical memory like Nickel Cadmium batteries. The NiMH batteries do not require a specific charging cycle and will not be made less effective by under charging or over charging.

Back to Table of contents.

11.2.6. Can I damage my batteries if I leave the power cord connected for a long time?

No. However, if you are not going to use your Victor for a long time such as being away on vacation it is best to disconnect it from the power mains.

No. Victor will simply eject the CD.

Back to Table of contents.

11.3.3. Why does my Victor make whining or chirpy sounds every couple of minutes?

This is the normal sound of the CDROM drive while the player is reading information from the CD. For DAISY CD books, fifteen seconds after the CD read is complete the CD will spin down to save power and become silent for a minute or two until it needs to be read again. Pressing navigation keys or jumping to a bookmark will also cause the CD to spin-up in order to be repositioned to the new location.

Back to Table of contents.

11.3.4. What should I do if my CD skips or stops playing?

Poor quality CD's or CD's with fingerprints or scratches will often not play properly or not play at all. Eject the CD. Try cleaning it using a soft lint free cloth or CD cleaning cloth which can be purchased at most stores that sell CD's. Do not use paper towel or tissues. clean the surface of the CD from the middle towards the outer edge. If the CD still does not play, it should be inspected for scratches. Scratched CD's should be returned for replacement.

Back to Table of contents.

11.3.6. May I attach a Braille or other label to the CD?

No. The label can adversely affect the balance of the CD as it spins at high speed. Also, if the label should come loose inside the player it could damage the CD-ROM drive. IF you receive a CD with a Braille or other non manufacturer's label you should remove it.

Back to Table of contents.

11.3.7. Why do I sometimes hear the message, "No disk", when I press a key even though there is a CD loaded?

This may happen if you press keys too soon after inserting the CD or turning on the player. Victor Reader requires some time to scan the disk and load the DAISY navigation information. After turning on your player or inserting a CD, you should wait until Victor announces the book title before you press any keys.

Back to Table of contents.

11.3.8. What does the message, "bad disk" mean?

This is the message Victor issues if it cannot read the information on the CD. Ensure the CD is inserted with the playing surface facing down and that it has no fingerprints or scratches.

Back to Table of contents.

Back to Table of contents.

11.3.10. What does the message, "Audio format not supported" mean?

The CD has audio files that Victor recognizes but the files are formatted in a way that is incompatible with the Victor software. You should notify VisuAide technical support.

Back to Table of contents.

11.3.11. Can I damage my Victor by playing a scratched CD?

No. The CD reading lens does not come in contact with the CD surface so it will not be damaged if the CD is scratched. It will also not be subject to wear from repeated plays as with cassette players.

Back to Table of contents.

11.3.12. Why do some MP3 CD's that I create on my computer not play on Victor?

Victor will play only MP3 files. It will not play MP2 or MP4 files. Not all MP3 encoders on the market have been tested so it may also be possible that the type of MP3 encoder used by your computer's CD burning software may be incompatible. If you have an MP3 file that does not play, contact VisuAide technical support for more information.

11.4.2. Can the internal Victor software be updated?

Yes. When VisuAide upgrades the Classic software, customers are able to install the new software by simply inserting a special upgrade CD into the player which automatically refreshes its internal software program. 11.5. Recording

11.5.1. For my Classic + With Recording, what happens if I accidentally remove the flash card without pressing eject.

Victor will issue the message, "Card unsafely removed. Please press Eject before removing.". If the player was not accessing the card when you removed it, it should be okay but it is possible to lose some recorded data if the flash card is removed without pressing EJECT. Removing the card when the player is turned off is fine.

Back to Table of contents.

11.5.2. Why does my Classic + With Recording issue the message, "Internal selected for quick notes" when I eject the flash card?

In the Menu you have selected that Quick Notes should be recorded by default to the flash card. Thus, if you remove the flash card, Victor will inform you that Quick Notes will now be saved to internal memory. Re-inserting the card will result in the message, "Card selected for Quick Notes". If you select internal memory as the default for your Quick Notes then these messages will not be issued.

Back to Table of contents.

11.5.3. Why is there sometimes a long delay after I end a recording before I hear the message that the note has been saved?

In general, the longer your recording or the more fragmented the flash memory the longer it will take to save the recording. Indeed, a long recording such as a class lecture may take a couple of minutes to save. Try to use high compression recording especially for voice recordings as these require only 20% of the file space required for low compression recordings. Also, if possible, break up long recordings into several shorter segments.

Back to Table of contents.

11.5.4. Why do I have a category named, DEFAULT,?

All audio notes must be recorded in a category. If you recorded a note to either the flash card or internal memory before creating at least one category then Victor will automatically create the DEFAULT category. However, you can rename the default category to a more suitable name.

Back to Table of contents.

11.5.5. How can I copy a DAISY book to my flash card?

You must copy all the files of the source DAISY book into the root of the flash card. It is not possible to copy a portion of the DAISY book.

Back to Table of contents.

11.5.6. When I insert my flash card, why does Victor sometimes say "Disk bad"?

Try removing the card and re-inserting it several times. If the card has worked before, it may be in an invalid internal state and re-inserting the card will reset the communication with the device. If the card has never worked on the Victor before but works in other devices, please contact VisuAide with the model and part number of the card so we can do further testing.

Back to Table of contents.

11.5.7. How do I write-protect the SD flash card?

SD cards have a small tab on the lower right edge which you can slide up and down. When the tab is in the up position, the SD card is write protected which means it is protected from recording. If you wish to record on the card or copy files to it from your PC, this tab must be in the down position.

Note also, that if you protect the card then the Menu Memory Management options such as Record Quick Notes to Card, Record Card Label, and Backup cannot be selected. If the SD card is protected and you select these Menu options, Victor Reader will issue the error, "Card is write-protected".

Back to Table of contents.

11.5.8. Are SDIO cards supported?

Not yet. Currently VisuAide support MMC and SD memory cards. Even though the SDIO is similar to the SD, it does not respond to the same command set. Visuaide may include support for SDIO cards in the future.

Back to Table of contents.

11.5.9. Why is there a delay after the start-up welcome message?

Each time Victor is powered on the internal memory must be initialized before it can be used for recording. Rather than adding this initialization delay after the first time you press the Record key, it has been included in the start-up process.
