General

Q. What are the supported file formats?

MP3, TXT, DAISY 2.02, NIMAS, AMR-WB, NISO, XML, and HTML

Q. Can I play the ClassMate while it is connected to my PC?

A. No.

Q. What should I do if my ClassMate stops responding?

Hold the power button for 10 seconds to reset your unit.

Q. Why do my Volume Settings change if I insert or remove my headphones?

A. For your convenience, ClassMate remembers separate volume settings for the built-in speaker and the headphones.  This means you can set one volume level that is comfortable for the headphones and a different volume level for the built-in speaker.

Q. Can I edit my recorded voice notes on my PC?

A. In this particular version you are not able to retrieve your voice notes on the PC.  You can only listen to your voice notes on the ClassMate.

Q. Can ClassMate record in stereo or record music?

A. No. It can only record in mono and is optimized for voice recording frequencies.  ClassMate is designed primarily as a study tool and not as a music player.

SD Card

Q.  How do I transfer files to my ClassMate?

A.  There are two ways of transferring files. You can use Windows Explorer or the ClassMate companion (coming soon). Both methods are described in details in the ClassMate's internal User Guide.

Q. What type of SD cards should I use in ClassMate?

A. The ClassMate is compatible with SD (Secure Digital) cards up to 2GB and SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) cards of 4GB or higher. If you purchase a 4GB or higher SD card make sure the card bears the SDHC designation.

Q. Why does ClassMate not recognize my SD card?

A. If you have an SD card that is not recognized or results in many media errors, it should be formatted. Although most commercial cards come pre-formatted, it is possible the formatting was not done correctly. To format, insert the SD card into your PC card reader. Open the ‘My Computer’ program from your desktop and right-click (or press the Applications key on your keyboard) to bring up the contextual menu for the SD card. Select ‘Format’ from this menu.  For best results, HumanWare recommends SanDisk SD cards.

Q. Why am I not able to read all the files on my SD card?

A. After you copy files to the SD card, it is important to use the Safely Remove Hardware option from the Windows System Tray before disconnecting the ClassMate or removing the SD card from your computer. If it is not removed properly, your SD card's File Allocation Table (FAT) may get corrupted, resulting in files possibly becoming unreadable. If this happens, you will need to format the card and recopy all the files to the SD card.

Q. Must I always connect the ClassMate to my computer to copy files to its SD card?

A. No. Newer computers come with built-in SD card slots. If your computer has an SD slot, the fastest way to copy would be to place your SD card in that slot and copy the files to it directly.  If you don’t have an SD slot in your computer, you can connect the ClassMate to your PC using the long USB connector cable provided with the ClassMate. You may also purchase a USB card reader and connect it to your PC's USB port. These USB card readers will have several slots for various types of memory cards including SD. Copying to a USB card reader is usually faster than copying to the ClassMate through its USB cable.

Q. Why does ClassMate become silent for a minute or so after inserting my SD card?

A. The more files present on an SD card, the longer it will take for ClassMate to scan the card. When there are many files, try to organize them in multiple subfolders.

Q. When will MP3 files be available?

This particular ClassMate Reader software version does not include playback of MP3 files. HumanWare will offer a FREE upgrade shortly for your ClassMate Reader that will provide access to MP3files. Q. The more files I have on my SD card the longer it takes to add more files. Is there anything I can do to speed up the transfer?

A: The SD card’s file allocation table becomes more complex the more files you have in a single folder. When transferring the files, Windows must both copy the files and update the file allocation table. To make the table update as efficient as possible you should copy the documents to a single folder for each of them. Similarly, if you have many files in your $VRText and $VROtherBooks folders, then try to organize them in subfolders.

Q. Will I lose any bookmarks or player settings if I change the battery or allow the battery to fully deplete?

A. No

Bookshelf

Q. What files or folders do I need to create on the SD card?

A. No

Q. Can I save other types of files on the same SD Card that holds my ClassMate content?

A. Yes. You may save other content on the SD card that is not used with the ClassMate.

Q. I have a DAISY CD that contains multiple books and a Discinfo.html file. How do I copy this CD to my ClassMate SD card?

A. At present you will need to create a named folder within the $VRDTB folder on your SD card.  Select all the files related to that book and copy them to your named folder.  Through the provided Companion software (coming soon), you will be able to copy a Daisy book on a CD to the SD card.
