1. How do I upgrade my Trekker system?

The Trekker 3.0 version requires a new set of maps and a PC tool called the Map Manager. The Map Manager is designed to transfer maps into the Trekker PDA storage card. In order to receive an updated version of maps, the Trekker version and the Map Manager, our customers should complete the order provided on the Trekker Web page .

To be compatible with Version 3.0, users of Trekker 2.5 and previous versions will require a hardware upgrade of the tactile keyboard. The tactile keyboard, introduced in April 2005, is an overlay over the PDA's touch screen that allows the user to efficiently enter commands into Trekker. Please contact your Humanware representative for more information.

To install the upgrade, please follow these steps:

A. Install the Trekker/Maestro program.

B. Install the Map Manager Program.

C. Convert to the new format the personal P.O.Is that were created in version 2.7.3 and earlier. The Map Manager's personal P.O.I page provides a button called "Old personal P.O.I conversion" for this purpose. P.O.I migration should be done prior to recording new P.O.Is.

D. Transfer the desired maps to the Trekker storage card.

2. How do I install the Maestro and Trekker software?

To install a new version of Maestro with Trekker or Trekker solo software, an ActiveSync session is required. Insert the Upgrade Companion CD into your CD-ROM drive and press M, or select Maestro installation. The installation program will install the respective Maestro with Trekker or Trekker solo software.

The upgrade software you will receive will take care of the Authorization key transfer (setup.mtr file) from the previous version of your application. Please follow the upgrade procedure described in the CD's Read Me file and the installation onscreen instructions. The procedure is also described below.

In order to upgrade your Maestro or Maestro/Trekker program, please do not perform a hard reset beforehand as this will result in the loss of the authentication key. To begin installation, please follow this procedure:

1. Turn off the Bluetooth radio

2. Exit the Maestro or Trekker application

3. Remove all your memory cards

4. Perform a soft reset with the stylus.

The Maestro installation procedure has changed significantly. It takes 2 to 3 minutes to transfer files to the PDA. This is followed by a finish dialog on your PC.

But the installation has not been completed yet; it has just started on the PDA itself. At the end of the installation on the PDA, Maestro is launched automatically.

If you are performing an upgrade, the PDA will reboot twice during this process and Maestro will launch after the second reboot. In case Maestro/Trekker does not launch automatically, press the System bar key to start the application after you hear the last ActiveSync connection sound.

Furthermore, to protect your Maestro key from a hard reset, the setup.mtr file is placed in the root of the Dell Axim X50's Built-In Storage or the HP iPAQ 4150's File Store. This does not apply to the X51 because the program is stored in flash memory.

You can now reinstall or upgrade without worrying about your authorization key file.

The installation will set to factory values all Trekker or Maestro/Trekker settings. Personal settings and GPS receiver pairing should be fixed after installation.

Note: For the X51, the installation should not be performed while synchronizing events like Calendar, Contacts, E-mails, etc. In the ActiveSync settings window, under Tools/Options, uncheck all programs to be synchronized. Alternatively, cancel your partnership and establish a Guest partnership. To establish a Guest partnership on the X51, the first time you connect your PDA to your computer, press Cancel or Escape once the Partnership window pops-up.

3. How do I Install Trekker Map Manager?

The Map Manager is a new tool in Trekker 3.0.

To reinstall or to install a new version of the Trekker Map Manager software, an ActiveSync session is required. To install Trekker Map Manager, insert the Companion CD into your CD-ROM drive and press P, or select Trekker Map Manager and follow the onscreen instructions.

Trekker Map Manager will be installed in the default location: C:\Program Files\Humanware\Trekker Map Manager (if Windows is installed on your C drive). If you wish to select another location, use the Browse button.

Note: To be able to use the Map Manager, Trekker needs to be installed on your PDA.

4. How can I convert personal P.O.Is recorded in previous Trekker versions?

The new Map Manager includes a tool to convert P.O.Is created in previous versions to the new format. The Convert Old P.O.I button is accessible from the Personal P.O.Is page. After the "PERSONAL.csv" file has been saved on your computer, use the restore P.O.I function to transfer the file to the storage card.

A personal P.O.I is a unique file. It is therefore important to perform a migration of the old P.O.Is created in Trekker 2.7.3 and previous releases as early as possible. The new P.O.Is created with Trekker 3.0, will then be added to the same file.

5. How do I install the Trekker 3.0 maps?

To install a map for Trekker, an ActiveSync session is required. Make sure that the Trekker Map Manager is installed and running on your PC. Make sure you have enough available space on your storage card. Trekker Map Manager allows you to verify at anytime the space left on your storage card.

Note that the Trekker Map Manager reports on the status of ongoing operations, allowing you to verify if installation is ongoing or completed. For additional information, please refer to section 8.12, Managing Maps, in The User's Guide.

6. Maps are not recognized by the Trekker Map Manager

Trekker Map Manager may not recognize a map downloaded from the web or provided on a CD for two main reasons:

  • Map's version is not 3.0 or higher
  • Map has been manually uncompressed. Trekker Map Manager recognizes the .map format and will uncompress maps during the transfer process to the PDA’s storage card.

7. I cannot restore my old P.O.Is after conversion to Trekker 3.0 P.O.I format

When converting personal P.O.Is to the new Trekker 3.0 format, personal P.O.Is are first saved in a PERSONAL.csv file on the PC. No information is lost during this process.

The second step for the user is to restore these P.O.Is to the storage card containing the new maps. During this step, any errors that occur will be notified to the user. A file is created to help the user figure out which P.O.I is causing the problem. The file can be found under "Program Files\Humanware\Trekker Map Manager\error.log". For example, it can mention that there is a problem on line number 23 (meaning POI # 23) in field 4.

8. Can I recover my old P.O.Is after I begin recording new P.O.Is?

If the old P.O.Is conversion is done after you have started recording new P.O.Is with map version 3.0, you will need to manually add the old P.O.Is to the newly created P.O.Is. Please follow these steps:

a. From the Trekker Map Manager, use the Convert Old P.O.Is button to migrate personal P.O.Is created in Trekker 2.7.3 and earlier.

b. Find the "PERSONAL.csv" file created in C\Program Files\HumanWare\Trekker Map Manager\Personal. Rename the file to "OLDPERSONAL.csv".

c. Use the Map Manager to backup the PERSONAL.csv file created in Trekker 3.0 in your PC. Keep the same name.

d. With an edition tool such as Notepad or Excel, open both files and paste in the new "PERSONAL.csv" the information copied from the "OLDPERSONAL.csv" file. It is important to make sure that each P.O.I is in a different row.

e. With the Map Manager, restore the edited file into the Trekker storage card.

f. You can now delete the OLDPERSONAL.csv file.

9. Will a 3.0 map overwrite a map from previous versions?

A 3.0 map does not overwrite older maps. To prepare the storage card for the 3.0 map installation, after conversion of the P.O.Is, delete all the files related to older map versions, that is, map.* files, all routes and P.O.Is folders, using your Windows file explorer on your PC. Alternatively, reformat your card if you don't mind losing the stored data.

10. I have more than one map but Trekker says not one map is active

If more than one map is present in the storage card, you will need to activate one.

To activate a map, follow this procedure: Launch Trekker. From the Settings submenu, select Map activation. A window should appear containing all Maps found on the Storage card. Selecting a map will prompt Trekker to announce its name and current status, that is, either Selected or Not Selected. Select one or more maps (up to four) and press Enter. If you attempt to select a fifth map, a warning sound will be heard.

When simultaneously using CF and SD storage cards, make sure that all maps are located on the same card. Occasionally, when starting Trekker, the application will not recognize the storage card containing the maps. When this occurs, temporarily remove the storage card that does not contain any maps.

11. P.O.I searches take a long time

P.O.I searches may take longer when Trekker 3.0 maps have just been installed. The reason is that the P.O.Is database is updating internal structures when searches are initially made. Examples of searches that may take longer time:

  • Search by distance
  • Search by address with complex multiple search criteria (e.g. search restaurants with name including word 'pizza' on Canal Street in New-York city)
  • Searching time will decrease when subsequent similar searches are made in the P.O.Is database.

12. I have several storage cards with old P.O.Is, how do I convert them?

The Conversion Dialog of The Map Manager allows you to prepare a list of your old P.O.Is files (from different storage cards) that you intend to convert. Insert one storage card at a time. To add P.O.I files to the list, press the Add button, a message "Please insert an old map" will display. Insert a memory card that contains the desired map and select the OK button. Personal P.O.I files will be displayed in the list. Then, use the Conversion button. Trekker Map Manager will create a single P.O.I file named "PERSONAL.csv". This file contains all P.O.Is. A folder containing all the associated audio files will also be created.

13. Can I migrate routes created in Trekker 2.7.3 and earlier versions?

Old routes migration is not supported.

14. How do I use a P.O.I database downloaded from the Web?

Should you be interested in using other users’ personal P.O.Is, in downloading available databases from the Web or in simply creating new P.O.Is on your PC, Trekker allows you to import them. The system supports any database in CSV format, provided they contain at least the GPS coordinates (longitude, latitude) and a name, with a specific organization. Please refer to the External database format section in the User’s Manual Appendix for specifications. Any database different from the Navteq or your Personal database is considered as external and should be managed using the Map Manager tool in the External database page. This is an advanced tool that is not essential to the operation of the system. You can download multiple databases (files). The name displayed in the data sources list of the search dialogs will be the file name.

15. What are the computer requirements for the Map Manager?

Trekker Map Manager runs under the Windows 2000 and XP platforms and the minimum requirement are:

Processor: 166 MHz

RAM: 64 MB

Available hard disk space: 300 MB

Trekker Map Manager is compatible with most screen reading applications.
